Cost can vary from city to city and builder to builder. It’s best to get in contact with a contractor early in the process to get a rough estimate. Things like condition of the property, extent of the work, and any code and construction updating can affect the cost. For more detailed cost, please review my “Personal and Client Anecdotes above”. The lowest price I’ve seen quoted for a Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit is $93,000 in May 2023 from a contractor.

What are Junior ADU kitchen requirements?

Junior ADU kitchens are often called efficiency kitchens. The Senate Bill from when it was first approved required J ADU kitchens to have a maximum waste line of 1.5” diameter, cooking appliance that didn’t require 120V + electrical service or natural / propane gas (meaning no full size range and oven), and proper preparation area and storage.

How long does it take a Junior ADU to be approved by the city?

Timelines vary per jurisdiction but no more than 60 days for an approval by the planning department. The entire plan and permitting process can be a 1-3 months process. The quickest approval I’ve received from a Junior ADU is 1 month but because it was a concurrent (at the same time) review for the Planning and Building department.
