Altadena House Remodel
This project consisted of an interior remodel only. We modified the floor plan to eliminate unnecessary dead space and re-purposed it to create more comfort in the home.
We also relocated the front door so it’s behind a small covered (and exterior) foyer – to add an extra layer of security and spatial interest.
Background
The clients reached out to us for an interior remodel only. The house was spacious, but the layout didn’t flow well, and there were many unusable spaces. So we worked with them to design a better layout: re-arranging spaces around and, importantly, finding space within the house to add a proper master bedroom.

Design
We re-arranged the layout to include a master bedroom with a walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom. To achieve this, we converted the kitchen (towards the back of the house) into the master bedroom and moved the kitchen towards the middle of the house where a rarely used enclosed sunroom used to be.

This created a great opportunity for the dining room to be adjacent to the kitchen without affecting any of the other spaces and rooms.
We added a skylight to the kitchen to bring more light in.

The interior layout of the home flows better and feels more open and functional.
This was a fun project. It challenged us to work with what we had because the client didn’t want to add square footage. So we had to re-imagine the spaces to fit their needs and lifestyles.

The clients were worried about the plan review schedule because this project is located in unincorporated Los Angeles County and the Building Department in Arcadia was notoriously slow.
Thankfully though we got approval in a matter of weeks because we didn’t need the Planning Department review (interior only work). The review with Building and Safety also didn’t take long because of the minimal structural work (plus no exterior wall work).
