Strang Home Remodel

This project is a home Remodel & first and second-floor addition. The end product is a two-story house with an attached one-car garage.

Scope of Work

• Complete remodeling to the existing single-story 676 SF house (2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, kitchen, dining, and living room area)
• Addition of 1,470 SF – first and second-floor addition (3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms)
• Total house square footage: 2,146 SF

Location

East Los Angeles, California

This project is important in our career because it’s located in East LA, where we got started. The house is a few blocks from where Daniel grew up, so it was important to us to design something that would be nice for the neighborhood.

The clients wanted to remodel the second house on their parents’ lot, so we demolished the entire one-story house and literally left a 1-foot wall.

We designed a two-story house. The footprint is small due to the site and because the existing structures had to remain.

We designed the first floor as an open floor plan kitchen and living room with an attached one-car garage and the second floor is the master bedroom and one additional bedroom. 

The second floor also has a deck with views and is spacious enough for hanging out.

The exterior of the house is white smooth stucco. The clients personalized the design by adding wood siding for the second floor during construction. It think it adds warmth to the exterior, it was an excellent choice!

Challenges

We had a few challenges for this project, including:

• Building the foundation right next to the property line. The clients wanted to maintain the building footprint next to the property line. To do that, we proposed to leave 12″ of footing and wall and rebuild the rest of the wall as new. This is a good hack to keep more space
